I found that the photos used in our group projects exhibit fair use of copyrighted material because we are using them in a critique form. Our group is using these photos in a non-profit comparison. We are simply trying to find if there is a correlation and parallel between rap music and negative influences they have towards children. For our project we found pictures of children demonstrating characteristics that are mentioned in a lot of rap lyrics. Whether it is doing drugs, consuming alcohol underage, shooting people, or grabbing hookers off the street, there is evidence out there that kids are influenced by this. The evidence is the photos we use and we are simply using it as a critique.
Our project is also labeled as fair use because we are providing our own commentary. When we look at these photos and then look at the lyrics in songs we provide our own interpretation on how there are similarities between the two. For example if we look at lyrics by Meek Mill and he talks about “shooting up the joint” and then you see a photograph of child pointing at the camera, pretending he is holding a gun and he has a Meek Mill t-shirt, we will provide our own commentary about how the lyrics more then likely influence the child.
Finally, our project is fair use of copyrighted material because we are using it strictly for research. We really want to discover if there is a relation between rap lyrics and negative behavior. The photos and lyrics we exhume for our project are used strictly for researching purposes. It is not like we want to make a music video with rap songs and display pictures in the background. We are simply researching, commentating, critiquing and using it as a comparison.
